What to Expect When Getting Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Are you tired of spending time and money on shaving and waxing? Click here to find out what you should expect when getting laser hair removal treatment.

Are you “done” with shaving, waxing, and plucking? Whether it’s your legs, underarms, bikini line, or top lip, hair removal can be a time-consuming hassle.

What if you never had to worry about unwanted hair again? Laser hair removal is a popular cosmetic procedure that offers a permanent solution to unwanted body hair.

It’s one of the most efficient ways to achieve hair-free skin. It may require multiple sessions, but after completing the treatments, you won’t have to shave or wax regularly.

Let’s take a look at laser hair removal treatment.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal involves the use of laser light pulses to destroy hair follicles.  It targets melanin in the hair follicle and damages the follicle to stop hair growth.

Treatments target hair follicles in the growth phase to halt growth permanently. The laser targets melanin in hair follicles, and works well on individuals with light skin colour and dark, coarse hair.

The latest laser technologies are safe and provide effective results on those with other hair and skin tones as well.

Why Do People Choose Laser Hair Removal?

Some people deal with excessive body hair or unwanted body hair day after day. They turn to permanent hair removal when they want a real solution without the daily need to shave, tweeze, wax, thread, or pluck their hair.

Laser hair removal eliminates the need for these types of hair removal options and provides long-lasting results. Some benefits include:

  • A long-term solution to unwanted body hair
  • Allows for an easy self-care routine following laser treatments
  • Can reduce ingrown hairs, bumps, and itching from shaving
  • No downtime is needed after the treatment
  • Saves money on hair removal tools and products

First Steps and Preparation

Your AW3 Certified Laser Technician will review your health history, explain the procedure, and discuss the risks and benefits of laser hair removal. You want to make sure it’s an appropriate treatment option for you.

To prepare for laser hair removal, avoid waxing or plucking the treatment area four to six weeks before the procedure. These activities temporarily remove the root and hair follicles the laser will target.

Shaving before laser hair removal is acceptable since it only cuts the hair, leaving the follicles intact. Shaving is recommended 24 hours before your laser procedure.

This allows the laser to target hair follicles easily, and ensure an effective pain free treatment.

Some things you can do to prepare for your treatment include:

  • Choose a reputable laser hair removal specialist – for example a certified AW3 Technician
  • Avoid the sun before having laser hair removal treatments
  • Avoid using tanning cream that cause skin darkening
  • Shave the area 24 hours before your laser treatments
  • Avoid tweezing or waxing before or between appointments

During the Procedure

Your AW3 certified hair removal specialist will adjust the laser settings according to skin colour, hair thickness, and treatment location. They will apply a cooling gel with and a crystal freeze device to protect the skin and ensure safe, effective pain free treatments.

During laser hair removal treatment, you will receive pulses of light aimed at the treatment area. You may feel some slight discomfort, like a the area is becoming warm.

The first treatment typically causes the most sensation. The treatment can vary from a few minutes to an hour should multiple area’s be treated in the same session.

Once your treatment is over, you may will be given full aftercare instructions.

Recovery After the Procedure

You may notice some redness and warmth in the treated area for a few hours.

You can wear makeup the day after your treatment. After laser hair removal, be sure to use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and stay out of the sun as much as possible.

To speed up your recovery process after undergoing laser hair removal, you may be asked to do the following:

  • Exfoliate the treated area to stimulate the shedding process
  • Cut or shave hair regrowth
  • Use sunscreen
  • Avoid harsh or perfumed skincare products

The Results

Hair follicles can take days to weeks to shed after the last treatment. Hair doesn’t fall out immediately.

Laser hair removal can delay hair growth for months and even years. It is a significantly more permanent solution than shaving or waxing.

Will the Hair Grow Back?

During the course of the treatment, you may notice some hair growing back, although it will appear thinner, finer, and with less texture, especially on your arms and legs. This is to be expected due to hair growing in different stages.

Hair will reduce with each laser hair removal session. This is why the results are most noticeable around sessions six to eight.

When you complete all sessions, the hair growth reduction should be around 95%. It’s great to not have to worry or spend excessive amounts of time on hair removal.
