What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Hair loss affects countless numbers of people across the world.

It can and does have a profound emotional impact on those affected. Aside from changing how we look, hair loss can change how we feel about ourselves, how confident we are, and, in some cases, how happy we are.

Aside from the physical and psychological challenges associated with hair loss, there is also the challenge of confusion. There are many treatments, pills, potions, and ointments out there purporting to be a miracle cure for hair loss.

Are they? Surely, they can’t be. If they were, do guides such as this need to be written?

With personal experience of hair loss, we don’t believe there are any miracle solutions in the form of pills, etc.; however, there are some excellent but vastly different practical solutions.

Some are better suited to individuals than others based on their circumstances.

So, to the purpose of this guide, we will look at Scalp Micropigmentation, otherwise known as SMP or a Hair Tattoo.

We will briefly look at its origins and then describe how it works and who it is suitable for.  We will look at how to care for Scalp Micropigmentation and how to keep it looking great.

In addition, we will give you some advice on how to go about choosing a reputable Scalp Micropigmentation Technician.

Lastly, we will give you our opinion based on our professional experience of providing successful Scalp Micropigmentation Treatments and our personal experience of having this life-changing procedure

Scalp Micropigmentation, what is it?  What exactly is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp Micropigmentation is a form of Micropigmentation. The goal of a Scalp Micropigmentation Technician is to recreate natural-looking hair follicles.

SMP is widespread amongst people who suffer from hair loss as SMP replicates the appearance of a full head of shaved hair. Indeed, it adds density to existing hair, giving thinning hair the impression of being thicker and fuller. Furthermore, SMP is very popular amongst individuals that have undergone a hair transplant as Scalp Micropigmentation is an effective treatment for Scar Camouflage.

A Scalp Micropigmentation Technician uses unique pigments, a digital tattoo machine, and fine needles to achieve the desired effect. In the hands of a skilled SMP Technician, these tools are a highly effective solution for hair loss.

Scalp Micropigmentation, as mentioned previously and as the name suggests, is a form of Micropigmentation. Another application of Micropigmentation you may be familiar with is Semi Permanent Makeup. Think Eyebrow Tattoo, Lip Tattoo and Eyeliner Tattoo.

Micropigmentation itself is descended from the ancient form of Tattooing, but it is VERY different.

  • Scalp Micropigmentation – Pigment into the epidermis (top layer) Not designed to be permanent
  • Traditional Tattooing – Ink into the dermis (deeper layer) Designed to be permanent

Other differences include the equipment used, and Micropigmentation is mainly for cosmetic purposes with some medical applications. Whereas Tattoos can have a deep cultural significance and are often used to tell stories.

What is Scalp Micropigmentation? Who is SMP suitable for?

We know the goal of an SMP Technician is to create the appearance of realistic-looking hair follicles for their clients, but who is Scalp Micropigmentation suitable for?

Well, answering that at face value is simple. Scalp Micropigmentation is suitable for an extensive cross-section of the population, ranging from people wanting to replicate the buzz-cut look to those wanting to add density to longer hair and everyone in between.

Simple….no, it’s not that simple as anyone bothered by hair loss knows that it is a deeply personal issue that can be rather complex.

There are different stages of hair loss: thinning around the crown, a receding hairline or both. Then, there are the stages of acceptance, as hair loss can be difficult to come to terms with. Acceptance of hair loss is sometimes challenging.

So, someone with longer hair that is receding may want to avoid shaving off their hair to have the buzz-cut effect.

Scalp Micropigmentation, what is it

Anyway, the point that we are making is that SMP is great, it really is, but for some people, there might be options out there that they prefer; for example, some who want to retain a full head of thick hair that can be styled as they wish may choose to go down the transplant route. The high cost, surgery, and downtime just might be worth it for an individual of that mindset.

However, SMP is a fantastic option for those happy with the buzz-cut look as the results are outstanding, the cost is significantly cheaper. Furthermore, significant improvements can be seen from the first session, and there is no downtime or recovery period as with surgery.

For those looking to add the appearance of thickness, SMP is a great option when weighed against a transplant, but, as we’ve said, it’s a personal choice.

What is Scalp Micropigmentation?  How do I care for my SMP?

After an SMP procedure its important to follow all aftercare advice and to follow a long-term care plan to help keep your results looking great.

Initial Aftercare:

Immediately after treatment the enemy of SMP, is water; this can be water directly applied to the scalp when washing or sweating from exercises or strenuous activity. So, the scalp must be kept dry.

It is essential not to get your head wet or sweat for 7 days, which can cause the pigment not to settle properly. After 4 days, it is possible to apply a small amount of water with the hands to clean the scalp but ensure you don’t expose your scalp to direct water sources, e.g., showering.

After 7 days, you can shower and resume physical activity that would cause you to sweat.

Longer-term Aftercare:

The long-term enemy of SMP is the sun; prolonged exposure to the sun can cause your SMP to lighten much quicker than the natural life cycle of the treatment.

We strongly recommend using a high factor sunscreen with appropriate UVA & UVB protection. Furthermore, daily moisturiser use will help keep the area looking great.

As we know, Scalp Micropigmentation is not a Tattoo, as the pigment is not placed deep enough into the skin to be permanent. However, the pigment will lighten over the years; this is normal and part of the treatment’s natural life cycle.

To mitigate this, we recommend a top-up treatment to keep your SMP looking fresh. The frequency of a top-up varies from person to person. However, 2 years from the original treatment is a good guide.

Factors that influence when a top-up is required include.
  • How well the pigment settled into the skin after initial treatment.
  • Exposure to sun
  • Maintenance, i.e., daily application of moisturiser
  • Exercise/sweating

One of the significant benefits of SMP is the fantastic results combined with easy maintenance and low upkeep costs. Keeping Scalp Micropigmentation in excellent condition is relatively simple.

Furthermore, this daily regimen is essential for skin care, so clients aren’t doing anything besides what is already recommended for healthy skin.

Additionally, when a top-up is needed, they are done in a single session for ¼ of the original treatment price.

Remember: Apply sun cream and moisturiser daily.

Does Scalp Micropigmentation hurt?

As with many treatments, the answer to this question is subjective and dependent upon the individual’s pain threshold.

Scalp Micropigmentation pigment is not placed as deep into the skin as a traditional Tattoo, so it will never be as painful. However, Scalp Micropigmentation is not without some level of discomfort.

Most clients report that the sensations are like a pinprick but not very painful. We even have some clients who fall asleep while undergoing the procedure. The discomfort/feeling is reasonable and not prohibitive to this fantastic hair loss procedure.

How to choose a reputable SMP Technician?

Upon deciding that Scalp Micropigmentation is the appropriate Hair Loss Solution, the next challenge is choosing the right technician.

This is an essential point, as you will want to choose a Technician with the correct skill set and personal qualities that complement yours.

After all, you will put great trust in this individual, so you must build a relationship with them to communicate your requirements and feel like you are being listened to and treated appropriately by a true professional.

Another point to note is to be aware of self-styled Master SMP Technicians…. now there are definitely Master Technicians out there. Still, we would categorize Master Technicians as pioneers of SMP, respected thought leaders within the Industry and Technicians developing groundbreaking new techniques.

These people do exist and are great for the industry.

However, what we don’t consider Masters are the self-proclaimed Masters who have only been operating in the industry for sometimes a year or so, and in some cases less!

Our top tips for choosing a reputable Scalp Micropigmentation Technician include.
  • Have they got a catalogue of before and after results from various clients with different features? Hairlines, skin types/tones, etc. Thus, showcasing their ability
  • Have they got reviews for you to be able to look at?
  • Have they got an established, well run Micropigmentation clinic?
  • Is the environment safe & clean, with appropriate licensing in place?
  • Do the results look natural?
  • Do the results complement the client’s existing features?
  • Have they come from a relevant background, i.e.? Do they have the fundamental skillset to be a successful SMP Technician? (lots of training companies advertise no experience or prior skills are required to train.)
  • Are they approachable? Do they listen to your needs?
  • Is it a cookie-cutter operation? – i.e. does everyone end up with the same hairline!

Finally, it’s always best to attend a consultation to answer these questions fully; if you have the opportunity, see if you can see some results first-hand.

At Permanent Perfection Aesthetics, we enable you to do both.

What Is Scalp Micropigmentation? What do we think?

Naturally, we are big fans of Scalp Micropigmentation.

When choosing the treatments we offer our clinic, we ask ourselves several important questions, including:

  • Does the treatment fit our ethos of providing Non-Surgical cosmetic procedures with high-class results?
  • Will the treatment be a good choice for our customers?
  • Will the treatment provide clients with their desired results?
  • Is the treatment good value for money/Can we provide the treatment at a reasonable cost?
  • Is it convenient, and will it fit around the busy lifestyles of our clients?
  • Would we be happy to undergo the treatment ourselves?

Once we are satisfied that the answer to each question is a resounding YES, we introduce the treatment to our clinic.

In the case of Scalp Micropigmentation, it is easy to form an opinion on it, as the results are on display and easy to see, meaning you can clearly see how good it is.

Our belief is also formed from the reactions of our clients and the stories they tell us, ranging from their initial look of absolute pleasure when they see the results in the clinic to stories of their friends who can’t tell that they have had the procedure done.

Furthermore, we have personal experience of having the procedure done, having experienced a balding crown and receding hairline.  To now have the super realistic appearance of a full head of closely shaved hair, so well done that upon a trip to the local barber, he thought it was a hair transplant, is fantastic!

Aside from the obvious physical advantages, the new look significantly improved confidence levels and meant that there was no longer a need to look at shiny balding spots when looking at photos.

So, through a genuine combination of super results for all to see, third-party stories of people who can’t tell the procedure has been done, and the massive confidence boost received by our clients and us.
