Scalp Micropigmentation FAQ
What is Scalp Micropigmentation?
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a precise, non-surgical treatment where a qualified artist uses specialist equipment to implant tiny deposits of medical-grade pigment into the scalp.
When performed by an experienced professional using high-quality technology, the result is a natural and realistic appearance that replicates real hair follicles.
The treatment is highly versatile and can be tailored to create different looks, depending on your goals. For some clients, SMP recreates the appearance of a clean, freshly shaved head, while for others it adds the look of thickness and density to existing hair.
SMP can be applied to the entire scalp, the crown or hairline, or used for density work — and it’s equally effective for both men and women.
What happens during the Scalp Micropigmentation consultation?
During your Scalp Micropigmentation consultation, Rebecca will take time to understand what you’d like to achieve and what “great results” look like for you.
Your desired outcome is always the starting point, so the plan is built around your expectations.
Rebecca will then talk you through a bespoke treatment plan, including the recommended number of sessions, an outline of the process, costs, and your aftercare guidance.
She’ll also explain the equipment and pigments used, answer any questions you have, and make sure you feel fully informed before deciding.
Where possible, we may also be able to introduce you to a client who has had SMP with Rebecca, so you can see healed results in real life and hear an honest account of what the treatment feels like and what the experience is like overall.
What Scalp Micropigmentation equipment do you use?
The first “tool” is the artist’s experience. Rebecca will carry out a thorough consultation to assess your hair loss pattern, scalp condition and the look you’d like to achieve. From there, you’ll agree a clear treatment plan, including recommended sessions and pricing.
Next, your hairline and overall design will be carefully mapped out to suit your facial features and age-appropriate preferences, keeping the result natural and realistic.
SMP uses medical-grade pigment and specialist needles that are finer than those used for traditional tattoos. Because the pigment is placed more superficially in the skin, it doesn’t age in the same way as standard tattoo ink, and most clients find the treatment far more comfortable than they expected.
Appointment length varies depending on the areas being treated, but 1–2 hours per session is a helpful guide. To make things easier, we offer evening and weekend appointments where possible across our two clinic locations.
When will I see Scalp Micropigmentation see results?
The good news is that most clients notice an improvement after the first session.
SMP results are then built up gradually over a course of treatments. Each session covers the full area, with the artist adding layers to refine the shade, density and overall finish.
After a session, it’s normal to see some temporary redness in the treated area, which typically settles down as the scalp calms.
When Scalp Micropigmentation results can I expect?
-
Full Head SMP: The look of a clean, freshly shaved head with a natural-looking, restored hairline and crown.
-
Density SMP: The appearance of thicker, fuller-looking hair in the areas you want to improve, matched to your existing colour and tones.
-
Hairline and/or Crown: A natural-looking hairline and/or crown restoration that blends with your current hair.
-
Scar & Transplant Cover-Up: Camouflaging of scarred areas, including transplant or donor scars where suitable.
-
Female SMP: The appearance of thicker, fuller-looking hair in the desired areas, designed to look natural and soft.
-
Alopecia SMP: A natural-looking result tailored to your pattern of hair loss — from a shaved-look scalp to density work, depending on what’s possible and what you prefer. Eyebrow restoration may also be an option.
How long does Scalp Micropigmentation last?
The good news is that SMP is designed to be a long-lasting solution — and for many clients, the confidence boost lasts just as long.
Over time, the pigment can fade slightly, so we may recommend an occasional top-up to keep the colour looking fresh and the result at its best.
How often you’ll need a top-up varies from person to person and depends on factors such as skin type, sun exposure and lifestyle, but as a general guide, every 2 years is often sufficient.
Does Scalp Micropigmentation hurt?
Everyone experiences sensation differently, but based on our experience and client feedback, SMP is generally very comfortable.
Most people describe it as a mild scratchy or tingling feeling rather than pain. If you’ve had a traditional tattoo before, SMP is usually reported as much less uncomfortable.
How many Scalp Micropigmentation sessions will I need?
This can vary from person to person, but 3–4 sessions is a helpful guide. The exact number will be agreed during your consultation, based on your goals and the areas being treated.
How often are the Scalp Micropigmentation sessions?
Sessions are usually spaced 7–10 days apart to allow the pigment to settle and the scalp to heal properly between appointments.
Can I have Scalp Micropigmentation after a Transplant?
Yes, you can. However, we recommend waiting around 12 months after your transplant to allow the scalp to fully heal and the final outcome to settle.
How do I care for my Hair Tattoo?
Scalp Micropigmentation aftercare starts before your first session.
In the days leading up to your appointment, it’s helpful to gently exfoliate and moisturise the scalp (if suitable for your skin) and make sure your scalp is clean on the day of treatment.
After each session, it’s important to avoid getting your scalp wet and avoid sweating for 7 days, as this can affect how well the pigment settles. After around 4 days, you can gently cleanse the scalp using a small amount of water on your hands, but avoid direct water pressure such as a shower stream.
After 7 days, you can shower normally and resume exercise that makes you sweat.
For long-term maintenance, we generally recommend daily moisturising of the treated area to keep the scalp in good condition and help the result stay looking fresh.
I have a busy lifestyle. How will scalp micropigmentation treatments fit into it?
One of the biggest benefits of scalp micropigmentation is that it’s non-surgical and non-invasive, with no downtime — which means minimal disruption to your normal routine.
Whether you have a busy work schedule or you’re very active, SMP can be planned to fit around your life. We offer evening and weekend appointments across our two clinic locations in the North West, and we’ll help you schedule your sessions so you can plan things like gym workouts around your treatment and aftercare guidance.
