Hair Tattoo Reviews – What Is a Hair Tattoo?

A Hair Tattoo, more professionally known as Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), is a non-surgical hair loss solution that involves depositing natural pigment into the scalp using a specialised microneedle.

The goal is to mimic the appearance of real hair follicles and restore the look of a fuller head of hair.

The results are immediate and long-lasting. Whether it’s creating the illusion of a freshly shaved buzz cut or adding density to thinning hair, SMP is a highly versatile and confidence-boosting option for both men and women.

Hair Tattoo Reviews – Hair Tattoo vs. Hair Transplant

Hair transplants are often the first option people consider when dealing with hair loss. While they can be effective, they come with significant drawbacks.

A hair transplant involves surgically removing hair follicles from a donor area—usually the back of the head—and implanting them into balding or thinning areas.

The procedure requires local anaesthesia, a recovery period of several weeks, and often more than one session to achieve full results.

Some important considerations:

  • Cost: Hair transplants can cost thousands of pounds, with no guarantee that all the implanted follicles will survive.

  • Healing time: Swelling, scabbing, and redness are common post-procedure. Full results can take up to a year to be visible.

  • Scarring: Depending on the method used (FUT or FUE), scarring in the donor area may be permanent and visible.

  • Not suitable for everyone: If you have advanced hair loss or a limited donor area, a transplant may not be possible or produce satisfying results.

In contrast, a hair tattoo (SMP) is non-surgical, carries no risk of scarring, has minimal downtime, and results are visible almost immediately.

It’s a fantastic solution for people who want a fuller-looking scalp without the risks or recovery time associated with surgery.

Hair Tattoo Reviews – Hair Tattoo vs. Hair System

Hair systems—also known as hairpieces, toupees, or wigs—offer another common approach to managing hair loss. Modern hair systems can look quite realistic, but they require ongoing maintenance, regular replacement, and a lifestyle commitment.

Things to consider about hair systems:

  • Daily maintenance: Hair systems require regular styling, adhesive reapplication, and washing. For active individuals or those with busy lifestyles, this can be inconvenient.

  • Cost over time: While cheaper upfront, hair systems need replacing every few months. Over time, the cost adds up significantly.

  • Comfort & security: Some clients feel self-conscious about wearing a hairpiece, particularly during exercise, swimming, or windy weather.

  • Scalp health: Adhesives and frequent attachment/removal can irritate the scalp and cause skin issues.

A hair tattoo is permanent, breathable, and completely fuss-free. It won’t move, peel, or require daily care—giving you peace of mind and confidence from the moment you walk out of the clinic.

It’s also perfect for those who want a consistent, natural look without ongoing upkeep.

Types of Hair Tattoo: Buzz Cut vs. Density SMP

1. Buzz Cut Hair Tattoo

The buzz cut hair tattoo is ideal for men who shave their heads or wear a very close buzz cut. The treatment recreates the look of natural hair follicles across the entire scalp, giving the illusion of a clean, even shaved head.

This style is perfect for:

  • Men experiencing complete or near-total hair loss

  • Clients who want a low-maintenance, bold look

  • Those not suitable for hair transplants due to donor area limitations

The buzz cut SMP creates symmetry, defines the hairline, and restores a youthful, masculine appearance.

2. Density Hair Tattoo

Density SMP is designed for those who still have hair but are experiencing thinning or patchiness. Instead of creating a buzzed look, this method deposits pigment between existing hair to create the illusion of thicker, denser hair.

This style is ideal for:

  • Men and women with thinning hair, particularly at the crown or parting

  • Clients who want to enhance a hair transplant result

  • People with alopecia areata or postpartum hair loss

The results are subtle but effective, and allow clients to keep their longer hairstyles while improving overall fullness.

Scalp Micropigmentation Case Study

The transformation that Scalp Micropigmentation can bring to individuals struggling with hair loss is nothing short of remarkable. It’s not merely a cosmetic change; it can have a profound impact on a person’s self-esteem, social life, and overall well-being.

Let’s hear what Lee has to say about the awesome power of Scalp Micropigmentation.

“Hi, my name’s Lee & I’m 42 years old.

My hair’s always been long, but over the past few years, it had started thinning pretty bad at the front & back. I couldn’t bring myself to shave my head, so I habitually wore caps all the time instead. If I was going out to a special occasion, I’d wear a smart flat cap instead of looking like a Peaky Blinder!

My partner Katie would always get annoyed at me constantly wearing hats, especially if it was in a church or something. Hair thinning ran in the family & I had seen my uncles & cousins go through it & eventually shave their heads. I didn’t want the baldy look, so I tried to keep what I had left for as long as possible, but it was getting worse.

Hair Loss options: Transplant

I looked at my options & the first was a hair transplant, which I would have had to go to Turkey to get done as it was cheaper & probably would’ve cost me around two grand.

Cheap, yes, but I had read good & bad stories about this treatment & I personally didn’t want to take that chance. One guy had it done, but it didn’t grow back properly, so they shaved it anyway. So, I decided this wasn’t the road I wanted to go down.

Hair Loss options: Hair Piece

I was having my hair trimmed by a lady called Michelle & she mentioned that she had just done a course in hair pieces & wondered if I’d be interested in being her practice model.

I decided to go for this, so she fitted a front hair piece & styled it in with my long hair, which looked pretty cool, to be fair. As I was also thinning at the back, she recommended I use a dry shampoo brunette spray to hide the thinning of the back.

I went straight to Superdrug & got three cans of the stuff for a fiver! It looked pretty awesome. However, the spray got everywhere. I was constantly washing my hands, forehead, pillowcases, towels, clothes, etc., this was a pain. I would also have to have the front hair piece removed & refitted every 6 to 8 weeks & the piece would also need replacing every 6 months or so, which wasn’t exactly cheap either.

I really couldn’t be bothered with all of this anymore. The final straw for me was a trip to Greece, which was a million degrees & the glue was literally melting the hair piece off my head & the brunette spray dripping from my scalp was not good. I got home, ripped it off & stopped using the spray.

My cap went firmly back on & I was pretty much back to square one.

Hair Loss options: SMP

I then came across a video on social media for SMP (Scalp Micropigmentation), a tattoo hairline. I mentioned this to Katie & she told me that her friend Amy, who tattooed her eyebrows, was considering doing a course for this treatment at some point. Unfortunately, she had no plans to do the course for another year or so, but I couldn’t wait that long.

Amy gave me the contact for Rebecca at Permanent Perfection, who she’d had treatments with for other things & told me that she also performed SMP.

I contacted Rebecca about my situation & she replied straight away. Within a week, I was in for my first session and couldn’t wait.

Scalp Micropigmentaion: The process as i experienced it

In the first session, Rebecca shaved my head, which was crazy. There was so much hair! Yep, I was now completely bald & had the look I didn’t want at all. However, she quickly started laying out the foundations, etc., which was great. I could slowly see it taking shape in the second session, but after the third session, I was like, wow, it looked awesome.
