Lee’s thinning had progressed across the front and crown, but he could not accept the bald appearance he expected to see if he shaved his remaining hair. Instead, he kept it longer and built a growing number of concealment methods into everyday life.
The cap that became part of every outfit
As the thinning became more difficult to hide, Lee began wearing caps whenever he left home. Even formal occasions meant finding a smarter version rather than feeling able to go without one.
“I couldn’t bring myself to shaving my head so I got into a habit of wearing caps all of the time instead. If I was going out to a special occasion I’d wear a smart flat cap instead looking like a Peaky Blinder!”
The cap covered his scalp, but it also allowed hair loss to keep controlling what he wore and how comfortable he felt.
Why surgery and a fitted hairpiece did not solve the problem
Lee investigated a transplant in Turkey and decided that the uncertainty surrounding surgery was not for him.
“Cheap yes but I had read good & bad stories about this treatment & I personally didn’t want to take that chance.”
He then tried a fitted frontal hairpiece supported by brunette spray across the thinning crown. Although the first impression was positive, living with it was not. Colour transferred onto his hands, skin, towels, pillowcases and clothing. The hairpiece also required repeated removal, refitting and replacement.
A hot holiday exposed how fragile the solution really was.
“The final straw for me was a trip to Greece which was a million degrees & the glue was literally melting the hair piece off my head & the brunette spray dripping from my scalp, not good.”
He removed the piece, abandoned the spray and returned to his cap.
